2018 Alumni Service Award

Presented each year at Homecoming, the Alumni Service Award recognizes an alumna/us who has made outstanding volunteer service contributions to Colby-Sawyer and to the public on either a local, national or international level.

Mimi Baird '58

Mimi Baird received her associate’s degree in secretarial science from Colby Junior College in 1958. Throughout the years she has been a loyal and engaged alumna. She served as secretary of the Alumni Board from 1966-1968 and again from 1974-1975. Mimi has generously supported her college over the years, making gifts to the Colby-Sawyer Fund and the new Center for Art + Design. She is also a member of the college’s Heritage Society, which recognizes and honors individuals who have provided for Colby-Sawyer in their estate plans.

Mimi has served on numerous boards in and around her home of Woodstock, Vt., including the Woodstock Community Trust and the Vermont Historical Society. She is an emeritus trustee of the Calvin Coolidge Foundation. During her tenure on their board she served on numerous committees, was president for 4 years, and was chair of their capital campaign committee, which raised $3.8 million to establish the Calvin Coolidge Museum &Education Center in Plymouth Notch, Vt.

In 2015, Mimi’s first book was published: He Wanted the Moon: The Madness and Medical Genius of Dr. Perry Baird, and His Daughter’s Quest to Know Him. The memoir was named a Washington Post Best Book of 2015. The book is in the process of being produced as a major motion picture by well-known producer Tony Kushner and Plan B Studios, which is Brad Pitt’s production company. Mimi has twice visited the Colby-Sawyer campus to lead book discussions.
