Presented each year at Homecoming, the Alumni Service Award recognizes an alumna/us who has made outstanding volunteer service contributions to Colby-Sawyer and to the public on either a local, national or international level.
From an early age, Joan was raised to give back in whatever capacity she could. “Over time,” she explains, “it becomes ingrained in your being.” A longtime trustee of Colby-Sawyer College, Joan has generously supported the college over the years. She has served on numerous other boards in and around her home of Middleburg, Virginia, including the Hill School; the Piedmont Child Development Center; the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church; the Middleburg Community Center; and the Middleburg Tennis Club.
Currently, Joan is involved in S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat) in Washington, D.C.; the Trinity Church Outreach Committee; and Seven Loaves (a local food closet). She holds the position of secretary of the Fauquier and Loudoun Garden Club, and is co-captain of Middleburg Tennis Club’ USTA 4.0 55+ tennis team.
It is perhaps no surprise, given all this activity, how Joan describes her philosophy of life: “the devil can’t hit a moving target."
