B.F.A. in Graphic Design

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design is for those who plan to be practicing artists and want a career in the graphic design field. The program provides broad study in foundation courses, starting with basic exercises in composition, abstraction and communication.

Students gain proficiency with hand skills and computer technology and work intensively using both traditional and state-of-the-practice graphic computer methodologies. In intermediate graphic design courses, students work with posters, page layout and logo design challenges. Students gain technical expertise while learning critical problem-solving skills in upper-level courses. Field trips to design studios, print production sites, and guest lectures by professional designers are part of the curriculum.

The Francis Lockwood Bailey Graphic Design Studio is located in the Sawyer Fine Arts Center. The graphic design facilities feature state-of-the-industry Apple computers with the latest software upgrades, scanners and printers. A second computer lab in Reichhold Hall is equipped with new 24-inch iMac computers along with a scanner, projector and laser printer. Here, video, photography and graphic design students can use specialty programs such as Final Cut and the Adobe Creative Suite to create professional quality projects and gain experience using the programs they will depend on in their careers. Along with all art studios on campus, the graphic design studios are accessible to students 24 hours a day.

Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition

Each year the Fine and Performing Arts Department offers every student the opportunity to enter the Juried Student Art Exhibition. This annual exhibit showcasing student work is made possible by a significant gift from Gladys Greenbaum Meyers '39, an avid and longtime supporter of the arts.

Capstone Project: The Senior Art Exhibition

Every senior completes a Capstone project, a culmination of work in their fields of study that allows them to demonstrate a deep understanding of a body of knowledge and perspectives informed by that knowledge. Each year during the spring semester, senior art students exhibit their strongest works in the Mugar Art Gallery. This exhibition is a required component of the Capstone Experience for all art majors.

Graphic Design Students Alliance

The purpose of the organization is to afford students early designer/client connections to real-world design projects. Community-based as well as college-based projects are used to enhance student learning and offer graphic design students valuable career-building opportunities.
