Currents: connecting with the community

Colby-Sawyer College Students Reach Out to Local Girl Scouts

Colby-Sawyer College students Kimberly Arena '12 and Amanda Gibbons '12 recently spent time with New London Junior Girl Scout Troop 1002 as guest speakers during a troop meeting.

Both students are former Girl Scouts themselves, participating in the scouting program as Daisies through Juliettes. Arena and Gibbons spent their time with the girls, aged 9-10, sharing stories of their personal scouting experiences and how it has enriched their lives. They also answered questions about college life and careers, and discussed Arena's position at the Dan and Kathleen Hogan Sports Center as a Zumba dance instructor.

The meeting finished with Arena leading the group in a choreographed, age-appropriate Zumba routine and encouraging the girls to include fitness in their daily lives.

Troop leaders Janis Stokes and Colleen DeAngelis praised the outreach of Arena and Gibbons, stating, “We feel very fortunate to have these two dynamic young women in the New London community. Their initiative to share their leadership, values and expertise with our troop is certainly commendable.”
