climate action plan for colby-sawyer

Strong Student Involvement and the History of GreenROUTES

During the 2006-2007 academic year, a group of third-year students enrolled in ENV 301:Community-Based Research Project formed "GreenROUTES" to Redirect Our campUs Toward Environmental Sustainability (ROUTES). Geoff Pushee, Alexa FitzGerald, Sean Wheeler, Kris Ramsay, Stephanie Goggin, Chris McClellan, Stephanie Seavy, Brian Valle and Anna Clark (pictured L to R)completed the first campus sustainability assessment for Colby-Sawyer while also collaborating with college programs and departments to develop an action plan to reduce the environmental impact of campus activities. They also recommended that President Galligan sign the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Read more about the 2007 GreenROUTES Project...

In 2008-2009, a separate group of students revisited the GreenROUTES project with specific focus on the ACUPCC. These students completed the college's first Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a comprehensive sustainability analysis using the STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System) assessment tool, and developed a set of policy recommendations to reduce the college's carbon footprint. Both reports served as a foundation for our Climate Action Plan. Read the 2009 GreenROUTES Report...

Acting on the findings and recommendations of both GreenROUTES groups, Colby-Sawyer hired its first Sustainability Coordinator in September of 2009 to support the college's obligations under ACUPCC and build upon the success of the original GreenROUTES projects. Colby-Sawyer also adopted the GreenROUTES brand as the umbrella for its future sustainability initiatives.

Colleges Nationwide Commit to Climate Neutrality

In September of 2007, President Galligan signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), making us one of 152 charter signatories of the historic document. The number of colleges and universities committed to carbon neutrality and sustainability has now grown to 650 nationwide. Read the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment...

Our GreenROUTES Climate Action Plan

Adopted by our Board of Trustees in May 2010, our Climate Action Plan is a living document designed to lead us toward two related visions: the quantitative achievement of climate neutrality and the qualitative embodiment of whole systems sustainability. We are working towards these visions through collaborative action in six interconnected areas: Energy; Transportation; Water & Biodiversity; Food; Waste & Consumption; and Culture, Curriculum & Investment. In the plan, Colby-Sawyer has set specific goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including a 50% reduction from our 2008 baseline greenhouse gas emissions by 2015, a 70% reduction in those emissions by 2020, and a 100% reduction, or “carbon neutrality,” by 2050.

It is our hope the Climate Action Plan inspires the extended college community to take steps in reducing their own environmental impact, wherever they can. Whether a student, employee, alumni, or local resident, we encourage everyone to get involved by bringing creativity and commitment to this global imperative.
