Coaching Certificate

The coaching certificate program is open to students from all majors interested in pursuing careers or part-time employment in sport coaching. Students are introduced to the core knowledge and experiential components of sport coaching in various required courses including the Theory of Coaching, Health and Wellness, Science of Coaching or Exercise Physiology, and First Aid and CPR/AED. In addition, students are required to take at least one elective that further enhances their foundational knowledge of coaching from courses such as Motor Development, Strength and Conditioning, Biomechanics, Sport Nutrition, and Psychological Aspects of Sport and Exercise.

The majority of states in the U.S. require some level of formal education or certification in the fundamentals of coaching, concussions in sports, and First Aid and CPR/AED in order to coach at the interscholastic level. Each state has its own specific certification requirements; however the coaching certificate is a formal acknowledgement of training and education in coaching that is recognized by most states.
