COVID-19 Mask Protocols & Policies

Face masks are defined as a face covering that covers both the nose and mouth. Face shields, defined as a plastic barrier covering the length of one's face, do not fulfill the college’s mask mandate by themselves, and are only deemed acceptable when a proper face mask is worn underneath.

Fully Vaccinated Individuals Must Wear a Mask
  • at all gatherings of 50 or more. Athletes, performers and presenters at college-sponsored events may remove masks while competing, performing or presenting.
  • at indoor gatherings of any size that include individuals who are not Colby-Sawyer students, faculty or staff. Athletes, performers and presenters at college-sponsored events may remove masks while competing, performing or presenting.
  • when experiencing cold-like symptoms.
  • in specific locations on campus where the expectation is requested. Individual faculty members or departments may require mask use in their classrooms or offices. All individuals should have a mask in their possession at all times.
  • any time they feel more comfortable doing so.
Unvaccinated Individuals (or Those with Vaccination in Process) Must Wear a Mask
  • indoors and outdoors on campus, except in the following circumstances:
    • when alone,
    • when in their assigned residence hall rooms with their roommates’ consent unless a guest is also in the room.
    • when not actively eating or drinking in the dining hall or Lodge. (This policy also applies to unvaccinated Admissions tour guests.)
    • when carpooling with individuals who are not their roommates

Any vaccinated individual who is more comfortable wearing a mask on campus should do so. No assumptions should be made regarding anyone wearing a mask.

Mask use for those who are not fully vaccinated and have been granted temporary exemption must continue until full vaccination has been achieved (2 weeks beyond the last required COVID-19 vaccination shot).

The situation surrounding COVID-19 remains fluid. Policies may be changed as warranted.
