Director of Marketing and Communications

The Director of Marketing and Communications leads Colby-Sawyer’s internal and external communications strategies, with responsibility for official publications and communications, the college website, the college’s emergency communications and other activities related to the presentation of the college to its constituencies and the wider public. The director collaborates with other administrators and all college offices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop communication and promotional campaigns for a wide range of internal clients, working with creative staff to determine the best way to present information that advances the institutional brand and creative strategies in order to correctly position the Colby-Sawyer College brand to internal and external audiences and interests.
  • Work in concert with other university departments and schools to formulate, direct or coordinate public relations and marketing communications activities that promote university programs and continually improve Colby-Sawyer College’s reputation.
  • Demonstrated ability to project manage and organize and coordinate responsibilities across team members to keep on task.
  • Plan and assign promotional projects and publications to support and reinforce the communications plan.
  • Serve as direct marketing liaison to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health and CSC’s School of Nursing & Health Sciences to meet specific marketing and enrollment goals.
  • Serve as editor of the biannual Colby-Sawyer Magazine, which includes content planning and creation; storyboarding; commissioning writing and photography content; hiring and managing freelancers; editing; layout approval; ensuring that efforts meet college goals and standards; and expanding scope of stories to show the college’s place in the world beyond campus and local area.
  • Advise the VP for Communications and Marketing on communications needs.
  • Serve as main media contact and spokesperson for the college, in conjunction with the VP for Communications and Marketing.
  • Represent office and college to internal and external groups such as the Commencement Planning Committee, Editorial Review Board, Emergency Management Team, Wesson Honors Program Advisory Board, Admissions Lunch Ambassador and New London Rotary Club.
  • Provide writing, production and proofreading assistance to other departments as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage one team member and multiple student workers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required, master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of eight years’ professional experience, preferably in higher education, nonprofit or for-profit organization.
  • Ability to work as a strategic and collaborative partner who can handle a high volume of work and multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and ability to write, edit, proofread, publish and produce print and web content and communications materials.
  • Familiarity with standard office software.
  • Experience in website strategy and production; public relations; working with media and emergency communications.
  • Knowledge of major and emerging social media platforms.
  • Project management experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with teams and to advocate for office needs.
  • Ability to deal with issues and problems involving several variables in non-standard situations.
  • Appreciation of the mission of a private college.
  • Anticipates non-standard work hours, including attendance at evening and weekend events/assignments.
