Colby-Sawyer Singers Present Broadway's Heroes and Heroines, Vamps and Villains for a 'Wicked' Good Time

Broadway tunes will fill the air as the Colby-Sawyer Fine and Performing Arts Department presents its spring concert with the Colby-Sawyer Singers and the theme of “Heroes and Heroines, Vamps and Villains.”

A vocal group comprised of students and community members, the Colby-Sawyer College Singers will perform under the direction of Susan Cancio-Bello at the Sawyer Center Theatre on Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m. The community is welcome to attend and admission is free.

Last semester Cancio-Bello surveyed her singers to find out their favorite Broadway characters and most of the responses have been incorporated into the show. The theme of “Heroes and Heroines, Vamps and Villains” is built around Broadway hits from shows that include “Chicago,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Les Misérables,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Shrek.”

Don Boxwell, director of patron services at the New London Barn Playhouse, will serve as the evening's master of ceremonies.

Director Susan Cancio-Bello has a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in counseling, both from Appalachian State University. She also has a music therapy certification from the University of Miami. Prior to her work with the Colby-Sawyer Singers, Cancio-Bello volunteered at local schools and libraries, organized the New Hampshire Troubadours, and participated in the vocal group Folk Fusion.

When asked what one word would describe the program lined up for the spring concert, Cancio-Bello replied, “Wicked!”
