CSC Players Want To Make You Laugh with '39 Steps'
The Colby-Sawyer Players will present the British comedy “The 39 Steps” on Friday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Sawyer Center Theater at the Sawyer Fine and Performing Arts Center. Admission is free of charge.
The play centers on one man's attempts to save himself and prevent an espionage group, The 39 Steps, from stealing top-secret information. Full of slapstick and self-deprecating humor, and more characters than its four-person cast would indicate, “The 39 Steps'” has an intense physical energy. Directed by Rebecca Strout '15 and Zach Matson '15, and starring Ian Whippie '15, Zach Melisi '17, Lindsey St. Louis '14, and Bibek Thapa '17, the student actors play more than 140 characters with the clever use of costume changes and accents. According to Whippie, he changes character more than 15 times in one scene alone.
“The 39 Steps” is modified from John Buchnan's 1915 novel and the 1935 Hitchcock film. This humorous gem hs been adapted, performed and directed all over the world by famous directors such as Patrick Barlow and even Alfred Hitchcock, and also received two Tony awards. While the complex physical elements of the production pose a great challenge, Strout '15 says that the humor is multi-dimensional. “It's a parody of everything,” she says. “We're making the audience laugh because we're making fun of everything they know about drama all at once.
