Students Represent Colby-Sawyer College at Alpha Chi National Convention

Three Colby-Sawyer College students participated in the 2014 Alpha Chi National Convention in St. Louis, Mo., Thursday, March 27 through Saturday, March 29. Ge Huang '15, an English major; Aaron Records '15, a Creative Writing major; and Jenisha Shrestha '14, an Environmental Studies major, presented work in their respective fields alongside more than 260 delegates representing colleges and universities from throughout the U.S.

Huang was among 28 attendees recognized with an endowed prize for best scholarly, creative or artistic presentation. Huang's “Democracy after Tiananmen,” an examination of the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, won the Patricia Graham Prize in World History. Records presented “Achebe's Weakest Link: An Analysis,” arguing against Nigerian author Chinua Abhebe's criticisms of author Joseph Conrad's implicit versus explicit racism. “Emergence Phenology and Secondary Production of Emergent Aquatic Invertebrates in the Tributaries of Lake Sunapee, N.H.,” a poster presented by Shrestha, illustrated the export of methyl mercury from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems.

Randall S. Hanson, professor of Social Sciences and Education and David H. Winton Endowed Teaching Chair, accompanied the students at the convention. “Aaron, Ge and Jenisha have brought much recognition to Colby-Sawyer,” he says. “It is the work of such students that makes me proud to be a professor at Colby-Sawyer College.”

Founded in 1922, national Alpha Chi is a coeducational academic honor society promoting academic excellence and exemplary character.
