Colby-Sawyer College Presents 'Hotel Cassiopeia'

Colby-Sawyer College's Fine and Performing Arts Department presents “Hotel Cassiopeia,” a look at assemblage artist Joseph Cornell's life and artistic process, on Wednesday, April 1, through Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at the Sawyer Fine Arts Center. Tickets are available at the mailroom in the Ware Student Center and at http://www.colby-sawyer.edu/tickets. Tickets are $10 for the general public and free with a Colby-Sawyer ID.

Directed by Assistant Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Suzanne Delle, “Hotel Cassiopeia” features Colby-Sawyer students in Professor Delle's Acting Studio IV class as crew and cast. Heather Dion '16 will appear as Joseph Cornell, Shauna Fox '18 as Marcel Duchamp, Megan Ashley '17 as Roberto Matta, and Marissa Donovan '18 as Lauren Bacall.

Cornell was an American sculptor and artist most known for creating shadow boxes using found objects. Playwright Charles L. Mee was inspired by Cornell's unique surrealist vision in writing “Hotel Cassiopeia” and explores Cornell's influences in the play. “The show reflects Cornell's process and inspirations,” Delle said. “It is not a straightforward biography, but through monologues and movement, it shows how an artist creates.”

Mee is the playwright in residence at SITI Company in New York, N.Y., where Delle studied devised theater techniques this January, specifically Viewpoints, which is a movement technique for actors. “Acting Studio IV students have been learning and will apply these techniques to the play,” Delle said.
