Colby-Sawyer College To Host Junk Rock Band Recycled Percussion

NEW LONDON, N.H., Feb. 4, 2008 – Colby-Sawyer College will host a performance by a New Hampshire band that makes rollicking music with trash. Their “junk rock” shows are spectacles of powerful percussion, banged out with trash cans, jackhammers and chain saws.

The performance will take place at 8 p.m. in the Sawyer Center Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 7. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students and may be purchased at the door or through the box office. For ticket reservations contact the box office at (603) 526-3670.

Drumhead magazine describes Recycled Percussion as “three drummers and a DJ from New Hampshire whose exuberant assault on buckets, barrels and even the kitchen sink shows just how much fun drumming can be.” In contrast to other percussion groups such as Stomp or Blue Man group, who present a more theatrical show, Recycled Percussion's performance is “what happens when rock drumming crashes head-first into a junk yard at full speed.”

Recycled percussion is the brainchild of New Hampshire native Justin Spencer, who says it all started at a Goffstown High School talent show. The group draws their inspiration from percussion great Larry Wright, who launched the bucket-drumming scene on the streets of New York City.

Though there are other groups who have done similar things with recycled objects, Recycled Percussion is the first to bring bucket drumming from the street to the stage. They mix traditional gritty rock and roll sounds, a sense of humor, and gravity-defying athletic feats worthy of the X Games. They use everything from buckets to barrels to sheets of metal, their own bodies, and even loud power tools to get the sound they are looking for and to put on a show for their audiences.

Recycled Percussion has opened for rock band Godsmack and 311, along with L.L. Cool J., and has performed at NBA and NFL half-time shows. Over the years, the group has become one of the most popular acts on the college circuit.
