Colby-Sawyer College Hosts thINK, The Boston Printmakers Members Traveling Show

NEW LONDON, N.H., Jan. 9, 2013 – Colby-Sawyer College's Fine and Performing Arts Department will host “thINK, The Boston Printmakers Members Traveling Show,” an exhibition of traditional and innovative prints, rich in visual content and story.

The exhibition, opening with a reception at the college's Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery Sawyer Fine Arts Center on Jan. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m., presents the blue and green sections of the original thINk The Boston Printmakers Members Show 2010.

The prints in this exhibition reveal a diverse range of techniques, processes and personal styles. Prints make people think and viewers often ask, “How did you make this image?” This show's intent is to answer questions about printmaking while highlighting the abundant talent and individual development that extends throughout The Boston Printmakers membership.

Works in this show focus on the traditions and innovations of printmaking. The artists of Boston Printmakers have submitted representative works highlighting their signature techniques. Each work is accompanied by a “recipe card” with a brief statement that teaches something about the concepts that led the artist to select a particular technique and method. The result is a sparkling presentation of ideas and inventions that includes each work's “ingredients,” plate or substrate, paper, ink, use of unusual materials and processes, as well as a few special secrets.

Each section has been carefully curated and pre-selected to represent all media in the original exhibition and to represent artists from all geographic sectors from which work was submitted. All three sections were shown in the inaugural exhibition at Zullo Gallery in Medfield, Mass., in May of 2010.

Prints in the exhibition are available for sale. The entire exhibition is represented on the Boston Printmakers' website at www.bostonprintmakers.org

The Boston Printmakers
The Boston Printmakers is a North American print alliance with a juried membership of over 300 established and emerging printmakers. Founded in 1947 by a small group of students and faculty at the Boston Museum School and the Massachusetts College of Art, its membership soon grew to include artists from across the country and around the world. The organization flourished during the postwar period, and today its Print Biennial is one of the longest-running and most influential printmaking exhibitions in existence.

One of the premier American printmaking collectives of the 20th century, The Boston Printmakers' history was recently documented by the book, Sixty Years of North American Prints, by David Acton. This publication is a catalog of the 60th anniversary exhibition of The Boston Printmakers, and contains a narrative history of the organization and of North American prints. (The catalog is available through www.bostonprintmakers.org )

Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
