Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Graphic Design Discussion of National Visions within a Global Dialogue

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer College will host Assistant Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Brandy Gibbs Riley's presentation “Graphic Design: National Visions within a Global Dialogue ” in which she will discuss her recent research.

The event is part of the college's 2010-2011 Artist and Scholar Lecture Series, and will be held on Tuesday, April 12, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Sawyer Center Lobby Gallery. Admission is free. College and area community members are invited to attend this final event in a series of lectures and presentations by artists and scholars, which is intended to inspire people and raise awareness of the arts at Colby-Sawyer and the college's proposed new fine and performing arts center.

After years of professional design work for academic, corporate and industrial clients, Professor Gibbs-Riley realized her dream of teaching and joined the Colby-Sawyer faculty in 2007 to teach courses in design and the history of design. Her work has been recognized by several international organizations and journals, including the University and College Designers Association, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and the Design Management Institute. Professor Gibbs-Riley's creations are distinctive in their bold graphic elements and simplicity.

Professor Gibbs-Riley has also put her design skills to work for the college, creating a striking new campaign brochure for the Fine and Performing Arts Department aimed at garnering support for a new art center and featuring the art work of students.

“I love working with students,” says Professor Gibbs-Riley. “What guides my teaching is my experience in the corporate world. I know what students need to do to be competitive. Students also know my background so they respect what I have to say.”

Gibbs Riley earned an M.F.A. in Graphic Design from Boston University and a B.A. in Studio Art from Bates College.
