Colby-Sawyer College's Cally White Completes N.H. Campus Safety Academy, Wins Director's Award
NEW LONDON, N.H., Aug. 27, 2007 – Colby-Sawyer College's newest safety officer, Cally White, has successfully completed the 2007 New Hampshire Campus Safety Academy (NHCSA) held at Franklin Pierce University. Colby-Sawyer requires its campus safety officers to complete the week-long NHCSA training program.
At the July 20 graduation ceremony, White also received the NHCSA Director's Award, presented to the officer who made a significant contribution to the Academy's academic mission, while demonstrating respect and support both in and outside of the classroom.
Colby-Sawyer's Assistant Director of Campus Safety Joseph Stearns is a co-director of NHCSA.
At the academy, officers participate in more than 57 hours of classroom and practical instruction and training. They learn about image management, history, role and ethics, patrol procedures and officer safety. The officers are also trained in aspects of law, cultural diversity and bias-related crimes, as well as in fire safety, preliminary investigation and report writing. Officers also receive instruction in dealing with sexual assault and domestic violence; the management of aggressive behavior, and drug identification and effects.
Growing up in Andover, N.H., White spent many a summer day at Colby-Sawyer's Hogan Athletic Center. Before joining Colby-Sawyer in early June, White served four years with the U.S. Air Force as a security forces specialist, where she gained extensive training in traditional law enforcement and security operations. White volunteered at an orphanage when stationed in Incirlik, Turkey, and finished her military service with nine months of detainee operations at Camp Bucca in Iraq. She has also served as an instructor in the Drug Education for Youth program.
“Cally considers herself an educator and feels the college's student-centered philosophy meshes well with her own,” says Director of Campus Safety Peter Berthiaume, whose department provides campus safety services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. “Since completing her campus training and graduating, Cally has been working independently to fulfill her duties as an officer.”
In addition to successfully completing the NHCSA, all Colby-Sawyer College Campus Safety Officers are required to participate in a 160- hour field-training program and receive medical certification as a First Responder (48 hours of training) or EMT-B (110 hours of training) within the first year of their employment.
“The academy and my training here on campus have prepared me well for my duties at Colby-Sawyer,” says White. “I'm looking forward to meeting the students and hope to be a role model by directing them in positive ways. This job is primarily about the students.”
The NHCSA was established in 1986 under the auspices of the New Hampshire Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators to provide quality training to officers who serve the needs of a variety of educational institutions. Approximately 500 campus safety officers from New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Wisconsin and Maryland have been trained since its inception. The NHCSA seeks to set a professional standard in campus safety for higher education and the officers who serve in the campus community.
