Colby-Sawyer Community Recognized for Leadership, Service at Campus Compact Awards Ceremony
Campus Compact for New Hampshire's 10th Annual Presidents' Award Luncheon, held Tuesday, April 8, recognized Colby-Sawyer's Nichole LaBelle '15 and Head Baseball Coach Jim Broughton for their outstanding leadership and community service, as well as Colby-Sawyer's partner in Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society.
2014 Presidents' Student Leadership Award: Nichole LaBelle '15
The President's Leadership Award acknowledges a student or student organization that provides outstanding community service on their campus and demonstrates a breadth and depth of involvement in a social issue. As a sophomore, LaBelle was instrumental in organizing the first Relay for Life at Colby-Sawyer, which shattered the original $15,000 goal to raise more than $24,000 for cancer research. Her junior year, as vice president of the Colby-Sawyer Community Service Club, Labelle recruited more members than the club had ever had before. She continues to reach out to new community partners and strives to involve more students on and off-campus at Colby-Sawyer. The second Relay for Life at Colby-Sawyer is scheduled to take place April 25-26 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
2014 Presidents' Good Steward Award: Jim Broughton
The President's Good Steward Award, which recognizes faculty, administrators, or staff members who have created and strived toward a vision while demonstrating commitment toward student and community voice, was given to Head Baseball Coach Jim Broughton. Broughton inspires his players to be active members of the Colby-Sawyer community by requiring each of his players to participate in a minimum of one community-centered event every academic year. Doing so “gives the boys an opportunity not only to help out the people in town but to see what kind of positive impact they can have on the lives of others,” said Broughton.
The President's Community Partner Award: American Cancer Society
Colby-Sawyer's Relay for Life partner the American Cancer Society, was honored with the President's Community Partner Award for nonprofit organizations that have enhanced the community's quality of life in a meaningful way through a sustained engagement with the college. Parent and Community Partnerships Coordinator Julie Crisafi Lynch nominated the American Cancer Society for the award because of the opportunities Colby-Sawyer students received through the organization to help raise money for cancer survivors, those battling cancer and their caretakers., “Our partnership with the American Cancer Society not only encourages student engagement with ACS but also with the greater New London Community and beyond,” said Lynch.
Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH), a statewide consortium of college and university presidents dedicated to advancing the civic purposes of higher education, sponsored the awards ceremony, which honored 24 campuses and their community partners. CCNH is a member of the national Campus Compact organization, which encompasses more than 1,100 college and university presidents representing some six million students.
