NEW LONDON, N.H., March 22, 2007 – The Colby-Sawyer College Dance Concert will feature student and faculty dancers and guest dancers from Chaos Theory Dance, a spirited and humorous improvisational dance company.
The dance concert will take place on Wednesday, April 25, and Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in Sawyer Fine Arts Center Theatre on campus. Admission is free and open to the community.
The dance concert will feature student solos, duets and small group works from a spring 2007 class called “Making Dances: An Exploration in Choreography.” The student choreographers include Jenn Madigan '07, Terri Marturano '07, Laura Nitu '07, Lindsey Welch '09 and Jillian Whitney '09.
Adjunct Associate Professor Susan Barnard will perform a new multi-media work, “Fit,” a journey of the senses with projected images and an original score. She will also perform an excerpt from “Look Up/Look Out,” in which she explores her interest in space, shape and lingering in the moment.
Professor Barnard holds an M.A. and M.F.A. in dance from SUNY College at Brockport and a C.M.A. from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies. She has been teaching in colleges and studios throughout the New England region. Previously, she created dances, conducted residencies and taught dance in colleges and studios throughout the Finger Lakes (N.Y.) area and nationally.
Billbob Brown and Rebecca Nordstrom of Chaos Theory dance company will perform pieces from their new work, “T.O.E. Dance,” in which they play characters Clock and Quark, two Quantum Mechanics who try to reconcile the great problems of the universe into a Theory of Everything. Set to a piano score taken from silent movies and bits of Queen riffs, Brown and Nordstrom dance and joke their way through gravity.
Billbob Brown, the artistic director who founded Chaos Theory, is an associate professor of dance at University of Massachusetts/Amherst, specializing in modern and jazz dance and dance history. He has taught and performed in Japan, England, Switzerland and throughout Mexico and the United States. His Emmy-award winning video, “Opening Doors,” with Buen Viaje, has been shown on PBS stations across the country.
Rebecca Nordstrom is a professor of Dance and Movement Studies at Hampshire College and a certified Laban Movement Analyst. Early in her performing career, she was a member of Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians in New York City. She has performed throughout the Eastern and Midwestern United States and abroad. Professor Nordstrom has been performing with Billbob Brown since 1994.
