Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Spring Dance Performance Featuring Student, Faculty and Guest Dancers

Colby-Sawyer College will host a spring dance concert, “Inspired Dancers Move with Delicate Beauty,” a performance of 10 original pieces choreographed and performed by Colby-Sawyer students, faculty and guest artists that feature modern, jazz and lyrical dancing.

Performances will be held on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, at 7 p.m. in the Sawyer Center Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be reserved through the Box Office at 526-3670. Tickets will be on sale Tuesday, April 20, Wednesday, April 21, and Thursday, April 22, from 4 - 6 p.m. and on days of the performance from 3 - 7 p.m.

The dance concert is directed by Tara Holmes, adjunct assistant dance professor of Fine and Performing Arts at Colby-Sawyer College, who will perform in one of the guest artist dances with her students. Holmes graduated from Roger Williams University in 2009 with a B.A. in dance performance studies and secondary education. She is working toward her master's degree in education with a concentration in integrated arts at Plymouth State University. Professor Holmes has recently returned from Egypt after performing for international schools, in a museum and at the Swiss Embassy.

“I was inspired to create this show through life experiences and from growing up with a passion for dance,” says Professor Holmes. “I'm honored to direct my first dance concert here at Colby-Sawyer. It has been a pleasure working with such eager students who are passionate about dance. Some have had training, but for others this is new. They have worked so hard and I am proud of what they have accomplished this semester. We hope many will attend to enjoy a night of powerful, graceful and honest movement.”

Professor Holmes' students will perform group dances and duets and include Devyn Amaral, Alanah Bacon, Richard Brassor, Lindsey Brown, Amanda Gibbons, Kyla Gifford, Abbie Morse, Annie Sabean and Asia Seibert. Two duets will be performed, one by Amaral and Gifford, the other by Bacon and Seibert. The students choreographed their dances in collaboration with Professor Holmes.

Other dances were choreographed by Professor Holmes, Angie Conte and Christina Robson. Conte, who graduated from Roger Williams University with a B.A. in dance performance Studies, is a gifted choreographer and performs in the Massachusetts area. The American College Dance Festival for Roger Williams University Dancers recently awarded her the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center this summer. Conte will dance in the Saturday night performance with her student, Nick Neagle, of Massachusetts.

Christina Robson, also a graduate of Roger Williams University with a B.A. in dance performance studies, is currently with the Seán Curran Company of New York City. She will teach at the Bates Dance Festival in Maine this summer.

The performance will also showcase Plymouth State University dancers and their director, Amanda Whitworth, in a group dance and a duet.
