Colby-Sawyer College to Host Award-Winning Slam Poet Carlos Andrés Gómez

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer College will host Carlos Andrés Gómez, the 2006 Toronto International Poetry Slam Champion and actor who can drop audiences' jaws in awe and drill them to their chairs with an eloquent torrent of words. Always telling it like is, the New Yorker digs into the darker side and shines a light on aspects of life from which we'd prefer to look away.

Gómez will perform on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. There is no charge for admission to this stop on Gómez's “Marjority of One” national college tour, and the public is invited to attend.

A former social worker in Harlem and the south Bronx and public school teacher in Philadelphia, the Ivy League-educated Gómez was the 2009 Artist of the Year Award at the Promoting Outstanding Writers Awards. He draws upon his experiences as an educator to address issues like poverty, pregnancy and masculinity, and he doesn't water down the vibrancy of his delivery when it comes to expressing himself on rape, racism, HIV/AIDS and war.

In one interview, Gómez says of his work, “I try to be the artist that I want to see up there - that's someone who's unapologetic and courageous onstage, but brutally humble to their craft, and to whatever the deeper truth is they're representing … I want to speak about things that cut something so deep that it sort of resonates in all of us.”

Gómez has toured all over the world and won numerous poetry awards. He was voted the Favorite Poet for his episode on HBO's “Russel Simmons Presents Def Poetry”; landed a role in Spike Lee's 2006 crime-drama “Inside Man”; and won an Emmy for his work with the “Respect Yourself” television spots.
