NEW LONDON, N.H., Jan. 17, 2006 – Author, filmmaker and adventurer Jonathan Waterman will present a slide and video presentation on Global Warming: Oil Versus Wilderness & Climate Change in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
A veteran of a half-dozen trips to the remote, 19-million-acre wilderness, Waterman tells an insightful and educational story through breathtaking images and candid narratives.
The presentation will take place on Monday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in Clements Hall at the Ivey Science Center. Admission is free and community members are encouraged to attend.
Jonathan Waterman's presentation has been updated for 2007 to include findings from a recent expedition he led with renowned conservationist Dr. George Schaller to study climate change in northern Alaska. A recipient of a National Geographic grant, Waterman, along with three graduate students and Dr. Schaller, visited with scientists and Native Americans as they traveled across the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to document the startling effects of global warming.
The program is based on Waterman's accredited course for the University of Alaska, for which he and his students traveled to the Prudhoe Bay oil complex and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
The group sought to determine the esthetic values behind wilderness preservation and weigh these concerns against the competing economic needs of the northern oil industry.
Waterman is the author of eight books and has twice won the Banff International Book Festival's “Best Adventure Travel” book. His television documentary films, “The Logan Challenge” and “Odyssey Among the Inuit,” have aired on PBS, ESPN and the Outdoor Life Network. Waterman is currently researching a book about ANWR through the lives of the conservationists Olaus and Mardy Murie. He has been presented with a National Park Service Special Service Award (for rescue work on Mt. McKinley) and the American Alpine Club Literary Award.
