Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Juried Student Art Exhibition

NEW LONDON, N.H., March 21, 2008 - Colby-Sawyer's Fine Arts Department will host The Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition featuring students' recent work in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking and graphic design.

The exhibition will take place in the Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery in the Sawyer Center of Colby-Sawyer College from Friday, March 7, through Friday, April 4. A closing reception for the exhibition will take place on Friday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Admission is free and community members are welcome to attend. The gallery is also open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The exhibition features 130 works by 36 artists, which include strong sculptural pieces, adventurous works based on found objects, and creative examples of graphic design, printmaking, watercolor painting, and photography, according to Rebekah Tolley, director of the Art Gallery. One of the exhibition's highlights are the large-scale paintings by Renot Lopes, which she says "burst with energy."

"Renot has included a wonderful commissioned and not-to-be-missed air-brushed portrait of (Colby-Sawyer College) President Tom Galligan," says Tolley. "Renot's positive energy is very evident in this delightful reflection of our president. The piece itself makes you want to smile."

The faculty of the Art department at Colby-Sawyer College juries this exhibition, and student awards are provided by various New London area community members and businesses. This annual exhibit is made possible by a gift from alumna Gladys Greenbaum Meyers '39, an avid and longtime supporter of the art program at the college.

At Colby-Sawyer College, students with an interest in the arts earn Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in the following concentrations: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Photography. Students also may major in Art Education with K-12 Certification or pursue a self-designed major in Arts Management. Minors in Art and Theatre are also available.
