Colby-Sawyer College to Host Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition and Awards ceremony
NEW LONDON, N.H. — The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Colby-Sawyer College will host the annual Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition featuring students' recent work in ceramics, drawing, graphic design, mixed and new media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
The opening reception and awards presentation for the exhibition will take place in the Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery at the Sawyer Fine Arts Center on Thursday, March 4, at 6 p.m. Admission is free and the exhibit will run through April 2, with gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The exhibition is made possible by a generous endowment gift established by Gladys Greenbaum Meyers, an alumna of the Class of 1939. This event, the college's largest art exhibition of the year, features pieces by student artists which were selected by art faculty members. For student artists, the honor of inclusion in a juried exhibition adds more esteem and value to the already essential resume-building accomplishment of an exhibition listing.
Individual Expression is Key Element of Exhibit
All Colby-Sawyer students are eligible to enter up to five art works in the Gladys Greenbaum Student Exhibition while those competing for a scholarship are required to enter five pieces so that the breadth of their skills may be assessed. In the past, students have submitted as many as 300 pieces for review in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, new media (including streaming video and animation), graphic design, design, watercolor, free form weaving, mixed media or integrated arts and installations.
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts emphasizes individual expression, and Professor Loretta Barnett, department chair, says there are as many variations to that individuality as there are students entering pieces into the show. “There are usually a good number of graphic design pieces as nearly half our art students major in that area,” she says. “What the faculty enjoy most is seeing our students present their best work and their being proud of their accomplishments.”
Scholarships and Awards for Outstanding Artistic Creations
The Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Exhibition draws a large audience of both college and area community members, and students often invite their families for the awards ceremony. The following awards and scholarships will be granted during the opening reception:
Edith B. Long Scholarships in Art – Established in 1964 in memory of “Coco” Long, these scholarships are awarded each year to returning students who demonstrate outstanding ability and interest in art.
Charlotte Cobb Stahl Scholarship Fund – Established in 1994 in memory of a member of the Class of 1951, these scholarships are awarded each year to students enrolled in the fine arts course of study, and the monetary notation of the scholarship amount must always end in 51.
Nancy Pierce Williams Scholarship – Established in 1998 through a bequest from Nancy Pierce Williams, a member of the Class of 1939.
The Tomie dePaola Whitebird Paper Award – Author, artist and New London resident Tomie dePaola carefully chose high-grade artist papers from his own studio paper collection and donated them to the gallery to be awarded to student artists.
