Colby-Sawyer College Honors the Legacy of Dr. Martin L. King Jr. and its Relevance Today with Peace Worker Arthur Romano

NEW LONDON, N.H. - Colby-Sawyer College will host international peace worker Arthur Romano in a celebration of the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The presentation will take place on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Hall at the Ware Campus Center. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

In his presentation, Romano honors the struggle and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and stresses the relevance of his teachings in today's world. Romano highlights Rev. King's support for principles of non-violence and his ideas for social reforms, and also considers how King might view the United States' current situation in the Middle East.

Through stories of peace workers, Romano shows how individuals truly can make a difference and that alternatives to war, such as strategic collective action, can be used to solve the world's problems.

At age 21, Romano dedicated his life to organizing or supporting peace-related events in the United States and around the world. In 1999 he founded the internet-based organization Youth for Peace, which provides students with the opportunity to share information and inspiration about events going on in their community with people everywhere.

Romano has also worked with several United Nations non-governmental organizations and with the Information Department at the United Nations to promote an International Day of Peace and the Ghandi-King Season for Non-Violence. Romano is currently a World Peace Scholar in England.

Following Romano's presentation, he will answer questions and offer support and resources for those individuals interested in becoming involved with peacemaking efforts.
