On Sept. 6, President Susan D. Stuebner shared this message with the Colby-Sawyer College community regarding the recently announced changes to DACA:

Dear Students and Colleagues,

Yesterday, President Trump announced his decision to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) administrative program. Since 2012, DACA has given thousands of young immigrants temporary reprieve from the threat of deportation. Many of the program’s current beneficiaries are college students. Learn more about the program here.

Though the administration will allow Congress six months to draft legislation to replace DACA, it is unclear how they will respond. As president of Colby-Sawyer, I will continue to support our federal legislators and national higher education advocacy groups that are working to find a long-term solution for the young people DACA serves.

Be assured that our college community remains committed to celebrating diversity of all types, and that we will continue to maintain a safe learning, living and working environment for everyone. Our ability to come together with our different backgrounds makes us a strong institution.

I encourage students who have concerns to talk with any of the many resources on campus, including Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Robin Davis, the staff at Baird Health and Counseling Center, or any faculty or staff member.

Sincerely,

Susan D. Stuebner
President and Professor of Social Sciences and Education
