Colby-Sawyer College supplies cable TV to the common areas in each residence, but not to each dorm room. You are welcome to bring any of your home entertainment devices to campus and connect them to the network. Due to the security and complexity of our enterprise-grade network, there are a few caveats to connecting certain devices to it.
There is no password to join the network. Your device will be classified as an entertainment device and granted Internet access. If you do not get Internet access right away and/or are prompted to create a guest account, please restart your device and try again. If it still doesn't work after that, please locate your device's wireless MAC address (a string of numbers and letters in xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx format, usually located under advanced Network or System settings) and contact the helpdesk. Sometimes devices do not get classified correctly and need to be manually changed in the system.
As a general rule of thumb, if your device has "apps" on it, then it will work well. If your device relies on streaming everything from another device (Chromecast, Googlecast, etc.), there are some caveats:
- Chromecasts and Smart TVs with Googlecast will work, but require some extra configuration. You will be able to stream Netflix using the Google Chrome web browser from a computer, but NOT from the Netflix app on a phone, tablet, etc. Other casting apps like YouTube will work fine from a phone. Also, you will be the only one that can "see" your Chromecast to be able to stream to it. If you would like to connect a Chromecast to the network, please bring it by the helpdesk so we can help get it configured.
- Roku TVs require a Roku account to be created in order to complete the initial setup of the TV and download apps. We recommend that you complete this process BEFORE coming to campus. That way once you're here, all you need to do is connect to the CSC-Guest network and then your apps will continue to work.
