Colby-Sawyer College’s Board of Trustees has elected William H. “Bill” Mitchell as a member of the board to serve a three-year term beginning May 1, 2017.

Mitchell has created a successful finance career in the media business. A certified public accountant, he began his career at Price Waterhouse before becoming a chief financial officer (CFO) in the cable television business. In that arena, he helped build TKR Cable Company into a $1 billion company, leading to its sale to TCI in 1996. Since then, he has helped turn around and sell seven internet media companies, including Audible and Backcountry.com.

He regards himself as an operating CFO who has addressed and resolved inherited Sarbanes-Oxley weaknesses at several public companies. He has also helped restructure internal planning and reporting strategies to foster enhanced transparent performance, which benefited from his grasp of online advertising tactics to improve results.

Mitchell holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College and an M.S./M.B.A. degree from Northeastern University. He has served in several class and alumni officer positions for Dartmouth and in 2008 received the institution’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Mitchell is married to Debra Bray Mitchell ’77, ’79, who received Colby-Sawyer's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. They have three adult children and enjoy hobbies of golf and skiing at their homes in Florida, New Hampshire and Utah.
