Senior Commencement Speaker

The Commencement Speaker Medal is presented to a student who represents the character of the graduating class and will give an inspirational and engaging speech that represents the college’s values and learning outcomes.

Kayia Alleyne '21

Kayia Alleyne, a public health major from Dorchester, Mass., is an actively involved student and leader on campus. A BOLD Scholar, Kayia is a member of Colby-Sawyer’s chapter of the BOLD Women’s Leadership Network, a highly selective national program of female scholars.

In addition to her academic work, Kayia has served as senior class treasurer, president of the dance club, and a student ambassador in admissions. She is a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force and has done diversity work for the Student Activities Office (SAO). She has also been an orientation leader, a member of the orientation board, and the women’s basketball manager. She believes that active involvement in the community is the key to opening doors and having an outstanding experience and that breaking out of your comfort zone is essential to achieving your goals and dreams.

A staff member said, “Kayia is extremely positive and optimistic in the face of reality and challenge. She displays a commonsense approach and has demonstrated a natural inclination to lead and support initiatives which benefit the entire Colby-Sawyer community.”

Kayia is currently formulating a post-grad BOLD fellowship and hopes to work with an organization that assists children who have experienced trauma, gun violence or opioid addiction. She also hopes to pursue graduate studies with a concentration in health care administration.
