A Career She Can Count On

Uyen Nguyen ’18 remembers exactly when she decided to pursue a career in accounting. While attending a leadership program in the summer after her freshman year at Colby-Sawyer, Nguyen met a lot of people in the accounting field. After speaking with them, she realized her analytical skills would allow her to be successful in this field.

Nguyen graduated in 2018 and was hired immediately by Deloitte in New York City. After a very short time, she was promoted to senior tax consultant. Nguyen currently manages a team of six people in her department, which specializes in private equity and hedge fund clients. Nguyen has been working remotely since last March but is hopeful to return to the office soon. She said, “I like to talk to people. I miss my coworkers and team. I look forward to going back someday soon.”

Since the arrival of the pandemic, Nguyen has taken on some new hobbies. She begins her day by exercising, has increased her cooking skills and reads accounting books. Nguyen also teaches English to Vietnamese students on the weekends. When she has time, she travels to Boston to visit her sister, who is at the Harvard Business School.

Nguyen believes the small liberal arts college experience was crucial to landing her current job. “I had the chance to take all different classes outside of my major. I made friends with people in the community of New London. I learned the art of making conversation about different subjects, other than just business,” she said. “Colby-Sawyer might be small in size, but we are big in our minds.”

Nguyen is thankful to all the people who have helped her along the way and wants to pay it forward. “I want to help people professionally. I want to help students. I want to be able to refer students and give back to others,” she said. Nguyen also shares this advice to anyone majoring in accounting at CSC: “Do as many internships as possible so you can figure out what you want to do and what will make you smile.”
